Google just started showing you which searches find your videos.

Search Console platform properties went globally available on 29 July. Verify a YouTube, Instagram, TikTok or X account and Google reports the terms people typed in the moment before they found you. It costs nothing.

If you run a YouTube channel, you have been flying half blind for years. YouTube Studio tells you what happens on YouTube, and your website analytics tell you what happens on your website. Neither has ever covered the bit in between, where somebody types something into Google and lands on one of your videos. That traffic has always existed. You have just never been able to see it.

That changed on 29 July, when Google made a new Search Console property type called platform properties available worldwide. You verify a YouTube, Instagram, TikTok or X account and Search Console reports how that account's content performs in Google Search, Discover and Google News. You verify the account itself. There is no website involved.

What you actually get

Google's own guide lists it plainly. Total clicks, impressions, average click-through rate and average position for your content on Google. The search terms people used before they found you. Which of your posts or videos pull the most traffic, which countries they come from, and what gets watched on a phone against a desktop.

A few of the mechanics in the guide are worth more than the announcement itself.

  • The 24-hour filterPost a video yesterday, open the report today, and you can see whether a particular search term has suddenly started sending people to it. Google's own suggestion is to use that to decide what to make next and where to cross-promote it.
  • Comparison modeGoogle explicitly tells you to compare URLs containing /watch against URLs containing /shorts/ to see how your Shorts perform against your long-form in Google Search, and /p/ against /reels/ for Instagram. That answers on data a question most channels have been arguing about on instinct.
  • AnnotationsRewrite a video title or a caption, drop a bookmark on the date, and check whether the change moved anything. Testing a title has always been possible inside YouTube. Testing whether the rewrite changed how Google finds the video has not.

The limits are real and they are Google's own words. Platform properties show how your content performs on Google Search only, and never how it performed on the platform itself. A new property takes a few days before any data appears. Verification lapses if the external login expires, and the property pauses until you re-verify it.

Advertisers are operating in a more cautious market, but they are not pulling back from investment in video advertising. They do, however, have stronger expectations of media accountability and a continued need to balance brand and performance investment.Gai Le Roy, CEO, IAB Australia

The reason this lands harder in Australia than it looks

Six weeks before that rollout, IAB Australia published its 2026 Video Advertising State of the Nation Report, built on a survey of 78 Australian advertising agency decision makers taken in April. Video had reached 29 per cent of the total online advertising market for 2025, growing 19 per cent year on year. The money is there.

The measurement is not. Nine in ten agencies told IAB Australia they have a unified strategy for planning video campaigns across screens. A quarter of them rarely or never unify effectiveness measurement across those same screens. So the plan is joined up and the scoreboard is not.

It gets sharper. Driving sales and conversions was the top media investment goal for 2026, named by 49 per cent. Brand metrics were the most cited measure of campaign success, named by 80 per cent, while sales metrics were rated important by only 49. The industry has told itself the goal is sales and is still marking its own homework on awareness.

Asked what they were most excited about in the next phase of video, 59 per cent of those buyers said better cross-platform measurement. More than any other answer. Worth reading next to where the record Australian video quarter actually went.

What we think this means

A free measurement surface just opened in the exact place the industry says it is short.

It arrived on the discovery side rather than the campaign side, so it will not tell you what a media buy returned. What it does tell you is which words real people typed into Google in the moment before they found your video. That is a record of what people actually searched, on your own back catalogue, rather than a keyword tool's estimate of what they might.

We build on the premise that a video is a search asset. It is why our YouTube work treats the title, the description and the chapters as indexed surfaces rather than admin, and why a twelve minute video with five well-titled chapters becomes six entry points into Google instead of one. Until now the evidence that any of it worked on the Google side was inference from how Key Moments behaves. Now there is a report with numbers in it.

The uncomfortable part sits underneath. Google is handing you a view of your own performance inside a system Google controls, at a moment when the same company's AI Overviews are reshaping how often anyone clicks anything at all. The data is genuine and it is worth having. It is still Google's own view of Google's own system, and it shows you the traffic that survived rather than the traffic that used to be there.

Switch it on anyway. It costs nothing, and the data only starts accumulating from the day you verify, so waiting three months to be convinced costs you three months of history you cannot get back.
